Following on from my chemical post, a few people have asked for my product recipes I use.
Firstly, although I would like to take credit for them, I can’t. I’ve spent a lot of hours researching (to find easy ones as I’m lazy) for them and I get a lot of them from a brilliant blog called Almost Exactly.
Here we go:
For washing my body and hair and face I use: water. Nothing else. If you want to go down the route of no shampoo you need to clarify first (can be done with a water and bicarbonate of soda mix), then just wash as you need to with warm water in the shower, giving a good scrub with your fingers to loosen up sebum on your scalp. Buy a boar bristle brush to brush your hair which helps pull oils through you hair to condition and prevent build up. To wash your face the best way is to get a flannel really warm under warm water and hold over your face until it cools, then wipe.
If you don’t want to go shampoo free you can easily make shampoo and conditioner.
Shampoo: 1 x cup of boiled water with 1 x table spoon bicarbonate of soda
Conditioner: 1 x cup boiled water with 1 x table spoon apple cider vinegar. Rinse really really well
Face wash: there are lots of options for oil mixtures (oil breaks down oil so even great on oily skin) but I use 50% argan oil and 50% olive oil. Give it a good rub and wipe off with warm flannel. Almost Exactly has a lot of info about which oils are best for various skin types.
For cleaning the house I make an antibacterial spray with: 3 x cups boiled water, 1/2 cup white wine vinegar and 15 x drops lavender (or another essential oil). Vinegar and essential oils are antibacterial. I use this spray to clean the kitchen and bathrooms and use no other cleaning products.
Laundry detergent : I used to make a liquid mix: 1.5 litres boiled water, 2 x egg cups of liquid castile soap, 2 x egg cups washing soda. Then you can put 1 x egg cup of apple cider vinegar in the softener part of the machine.
Now I am even lazier and make a powder with : 1 x bag washing soda and 1 x grated bar castile soap. Super quick and easy and washes really well.
Hand wash: best thing is to make it up but buy foam dispensers as you can water the mix down further and it lasts forever. It’s made up of 1 x table spoon coconut oil, 1 x cup boiled water, 3/4 cup liquid castile soap and 5+ x drops lavender.
For my deodorant I make it with: 2.5 x table spoons coconut oil, 1/4 cup of cornflour, 1.5 table spoons bicarbonate of soda and 5 x drops lavender. If it gets cold it might go quite hard but before you try and put it on you can rub it into your palm to make more creamy. I used to stink if I didn’t use deo but the longer I’ve used this, the less I need anything at all.
And that is it! I don’t use anything else, (except dishwasher tablets which I MUST start making but they seem a mission) I use bar castile to do washing up.
If you start making anything do let me know how you get on! All recipes are easy to alter or play with however you like.
